i believe rehumanization might be possible, but it would require repentance - which would require believers to accept their responsibility to prophecy (not in the sense of "predicting the future", but in the sense of "reminding people that they can and should do a better job of manifesting their buddha nature")

Speaking as a guy who likes to fight, I can't see the appeal of torturing or beating a helpless individual. The utter cruelty aside, how could anyone be so unsporting?
