I never saw Patti Smith at CBGBs, but I did see her at the Bowery Ballroom many times in the 90s on New Years Eve (B-Day celebration, she was born 12-30-46).

Best ever was when the Sonic Youth showed up, they played "Now I wanna be your dog"...AWESOME!

From The Pop Music Editor:

Rock & roll memories, misty yada yada ... through the windmills ... of my pants ... is it Jell-o time yet?

I met Patti Smith just before her first album was released. She knew my boss at the Strand Bookstore and had come by. It was just an offhand introduction, "This is Patti, she's a poet." He knew lots of poets and I didn't have clue who she was, so, aside from her striking looks, I didn't think much of it at the time.

More from Pop Music Ed.:

We knew a guy who knew her "back when." He claims once she hit the (relative) big time she pretty much dropped all her non-big-name friends.

So, don't think you missed anything.
