Well, the North won the first phase--the "hot" phase (1861-65), but the South won the second, cold phase (1865-77), mainly because the Northern elite, who did not give one happy monkey fuck about the former slaves, had gotten what THEY wanted: the Southern elite forced to stay in the Union, pay their debts to Northern banks, and serve as a resource colony for Northern industry. Once that was accomplished, the Northern elite let the Southern elite back into power in the South, because the Northern elite saw their Southern peers as valuable allies against uppity working people of all skin tones.
