The girl and her parents were at the range while on vacation, a sheriff’s spokeswoman told the Los Angeles Times.
He was standing next to the girl, instructing her how to use the Uzi, when she pulled the gun’s trigger and the recoil sent the weapon over her head, causing him to be shot, the sheriff’s office said.
“This is a rarity for something like this to happen,” the spokeswoman said.

Wait, wait, wait a goddam minute here. Depending on the model, an Uzi weighs between 7 and 10 or 11 pounds. 9mm has a very minimal recoil even in a 30 oz handgun. I'm not understanding how the recoil could have pushed the gun up over her head, and how the round which caused the recoil could have hit the instructor. Either somebody's full of shit or multiple rounds were fired. Just doesn't make any sense at all...

Fires, recoils, therefore round changes path in mid-air does not compute. Certainly could have fired a second round if she wasn't ready for the recoil.
Forensics would tell if I trusted the ammosexuals there to preserve the scene.

They showed the video on the morning "news" today. She fires a shot in "single fire" mode successfully, so he switches it to full auto for her. He's still standing/leaning near her as she fires multiple rounds and the recoil is too much for her. At least one of of the rounds then goes straight into his skull. Thankfully they cut the video right before that, but it's pretty damn clear what's gonna happen in a couple frames.
I feel sorry for the kid, and her parents should reevaluate their priorities in life.
