But one possible response: Aux armes, citoyens!You have to wonder what Katie Quackenbush would have done if she didn't have a gun with her and Gerald Melton, homeless guy, asked her to move her Porsche because it was making noise when he was trying to sleep.
Would she have driven away in a huff? Or would she have tried to run him down? Whatever the case, this sure feels like a strong case of entitlement.
It starts near Nashville's Music Row at 3AM on August 26, when homeless Gerald Melton was trying to get some sleep before the sun came up.
According to reports, he approached her Porsche SUV and asked her to move it.
As Melton walked back to his sleeping area, Quackenbush pulled out her gun and shot him twice in the abdomen. He is still in the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Quackenbush has a different story, as told by her father who is a lawyer in Texas.
“She didn’t try and kill this guy,” Jesse Quackenbush told The Tennessean a few hours after his daughter was arrested on the charge of attempted murder. “She had no intention of killing him. She didn’t know that she hit him.”
According to the father, Melton was hassling other women in the area and she shot the gun and fired two "warning shots," both of which happened to hit Melton in the gut. But Quackenbush left the scene, not even knowing her "warning shots" had hit Melton. That's her story, and she's sticking to it.
If she hadn't had a gun, maybe she would have just gotten in her SUV and left. Now she's booked into jail and facing a charge of attempted murder.
Clearly she shouldn't have a gun anyway if her idea of using is to indiscriminately shoot "warning shots" and not bother to see whether they might have hit someone. What a lucky shot, though. Both of them, hitting him like that. That's a helluva warning.

U.S. tanker Patrick J. Hurley, en route to Belfast, Ireland, is shelled by German submarine U-512 at 22°59'N, 46°15'E, and abandoned after Armed Guard gunfire proves unavailing in the tanker's defense (see 19 September and 2 October 1942).
Laconia Incident: German submarine U-156 torpedoes and sinks British transport Laconia, which has 1,800 Italian POWs on board, northeast of Ascension Island, 05°05'S, 11°38'W; the U-boat immediately commences rescue operations and dispatches plain-language request for help. In addition, diplomatic channels are utilized to seek aid from Vichy French naval units in West African waters (see 16-18 September 1942).
On this day in 1942, a German U-boat sinks a British troop ship, the Laconia, killing more than 1,400 men. The commander of the German sub, Capt. Werner Hartenstein, realizing that Italian POWs were among the passengers, strove to aid in their rescue.
The Laconia, a former Cunard White Star ship put to use to transport troops, including prisoners of war, was in the South Atlantic bound for England when it encountered U-156, a German sub. The sub attacked, sinking the troop ship and imperiling the lives of more than 2,200 passengers. But as Hartenstein, the sub commander, was to learn from survivors he began taking onboard, among those passengers were 1,500 Italians POWs. Realizing that he had just endangered the lives of so many of his fellow Axis members, he put out a call to an Italian submarine and two other German U-boats in the area to help rescue the survivors.
In the meantime, one French and two British warships sped to the scene to aid in the rescue. The German subs immediately informed the Allied ships that they had surfaced for humanitarian reasons. The Allies assumed it was a trap. Suddenly, an American B-24 Liberator bomber, flying from its South Atlantic base on Ascension Island, saw the German sub and bombed it—despite the fact that Hartenstein had draped a Red Cross flag prominently on the hull of the surfaced sub. The U-156, damaged by the air attack, immediately submerged. Admiral Karl Donitz, supreme commander of the German U-boat forces, had been monitoring the rescue efforts. He ordered that “all attempts to rescue the crews of sunken ships…cease forthwith.” Consequently, more than 1,400 of the Laconia‘s passengers, which included Polish guards and British crewmen, drowned.

On this day, in 1857, Mormon guerillas, stoked by religious zeal and a deep resentment of decades of public abuse and federal interference*, murder 120 emigrants at Mountain Meadows, Utah.
Although historical accounts differ, the conflict with the wagon train of emigrants from Missouri and Arkansas apparently began when the Mormons refused to sell the train any supplies. Some of the emigrants then began to commit minor depredations against Mormon fields, abuse the local Paiute Indians, and taunt the Mormons with reminders of how the Missourians had attacked and chased them out of that state during the 1830s. Angered by the emigrants’ abuse and fired by a zealous passion against the growing tide of invading gentiles, a group of Mormons guerillas from around Cedar City decided to take revenge. Cooperating with a group of Paiute Indians who had already attacked the train on their own initiative, the Mormon guerillas initially pretended to be protectors. The guerillas persuaded the emigrants that they had convinced the Paiutes to let them go if they would surrender their arms and allow the Mormons to escort the wagon train through the territory. But as the train again moved forward under the Mormon escort, a guerilla leader gave a pre-arranged signal. The Mormons opened fire on the unarmed male emigrants, while the Paiutes reportedly murdered the women. Later accounts suggested that some Mormons had only fired in the air while others killed as few of the emigrants as they could. But when the shooting stopped in Mountain Meadows, 120 men and women were dead. Only 18 small children were spared.
As a direct result of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, the U.S. government demanded a new settlement from Brigham Young. In 1858, the Mormons agreed to accept a continued presence of federal troops and a Gentile governor for Utah Territory. No further significant Mormon-Gentile violence occurred, and the Latter Day Saints were thereafter largely left to govern themselves. But the era of complete Mormon domination of Utah ended as a result of the tragedy that day in Mountain Meadows.

Launching from the Japanese sub I-25, Nobuo Fujita piloted his light aircraft over the state of Oregon and firebombed Mount Emily, alighting a state forest–and ensuring his place in the history books as the only man to ever bomb the continental United States. Skyrocketing demand, combined with unfettered mining to meet it, is creating the perfect recipe for shortages. Plentiful evidence strongly suggests that sand is becoming increasingly scarce in many regions. For example, in Vietnam domestic demand for sand exceeds the country’s total reserves. If this mismatch continues, the country may run out of construction sand by 2020, according to recent statements from the country’s Ministry of Construction.

Most recently, Shortey worked as the Oklahoma state chair for Donald Trump’s primary campaign.

The Congressman's att'y. claims his client is being picked on just because he's a Nazi.An ongoing investigation into “suspicious” activity in the back seat of a car involving an inmate trustee at the Fauquier County jail led to the Tuesday arrest of Teresa Jo Burchfield, the wife of an ethics attorney to President Donald Trump’s business organization.
Burchfield, 53, is married to Bobby R. Burchfield, a partner at Washington’s King and Spalding, who was appointed as an independent ethics advisor to the Donald J. Revocable Trust in January.
Burchfield, a longtime Republican attorney, served as counsel to President George W. Bush in the 2000 Florida recount.
Teresa Jo Burchfield was arrested Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot adjacent to the Fauquier County Adult Detention Center after deputies found her in the backseat of a car with an inmate/trustee at the jail, according to sheriff’s office Sgt. James Hartman.
Burchfield and the 23-year-old inmate were having sex in the car, according to a criminal complaint filed at Fauquier County General District Court.
"The defendant was caught in the backseat of her vehicle with an inmate...," Dept. J. B. Thorpe wrote in Burchfield's criminal complaint. "When the inmate exited the vehicle, he handed me a bag of brown pills (capsules), that he claims to be workout pills."
After the two were discovered, the inmate, Hartman said, was found in possession of cigarettes, clothes, vitamin supplements and other “unauthorized articles alleged to have been obtained from the female.”
The inmate was on trustee status at the time, meaning he was jailed on “minimal charges” and “authorized to perform work inside and outside of the detention center and sheriff’s office facilities,” Hartman said in a statement.
The inmate told deputies he had been meeting with Burchfield for about a month, court filings say.
The Sheriff’s Office declined to identify the inmate or describe his connection to Burchfield.
Burchfield was charged with willfully delivering unauthorized articles to a confined prisoner, a class 1 misdemeanor. She was released on $5,000 secured bond.
Attempts to contact Teresa Burchfield and Bobby Burchfield were not immediately successful Thursday morning.

And he's one scummy snowflake:Congressman Tim Murphy publicly admitted Wednesday to having an extramarital affair with a personal friend, issuing a statement about the relationship hours after the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette prevailed in a court motion to unseal a divorce action.
Mr. Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, is not a party to the divorce. However, the husband in the case, Jesse Sally, a sports medicine physician, sought in July to depose the congressman as part of his divorce from Shannon Edwards, a forensic psychologist.
Dorothy Wolbert, who represents Dr. Sally, said that the deposition is relevant to alimony requested by Ms. Edwards.
“He has the right to know what went on with this marital misconduct,” Ms. Wolbert argued on Wednesday before Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Kathryn Hens-Greco.
Dr. Sally alleges that the affair between his wife and Mr. Murphy began in February 2016.
Mr. Murphy’s attorney, Kenneth J. Horoho Jr., argued to quash the subpoena, saying that the affair was already out in the open.
“Why do you need to depose him other than to harass him?” he asked. “They got the marital misconduct. They admit it.
“At some point, your honor, it does rise to the level of harassment and bad faith.”
Judge Hens-Greco, on Wednesday, denied the motion to quash, and Mr. Murphy must be deposed by Dr. Sally’s attorney by Sept. 29. He must also provide calendar entries regarding political and work events, as well as text and email communications between himself and Ms. Edwards.
Following the conclusion of the hearing, Mr. Murphy issued a statement through his attorney late Wednesday afternoon.
“Last year I became involved in an affair with a personal friend. This is nobody’s fault but my own, and I offer no excuses. To the extent that there should be any blame in this matter, it falls solely upon me.
“I ask the media to respect the privacy of my family. They have done nothing wrong and deserve to be left alone.”
The statement concluded by Mr. Murphy indicating he would say nothing more on the matter.
In an interview Wednesday evening, Ms. Edwards said that her relationship with Mr. Murphy has ended.
Mr. Murphy, 64, who is in his eighth term in Congress, is a practicing psychologist and is married with an adult daughter. Ms. Edwards, 32, has a doctoral degree, and her practice involves significant work within the Allegheny County court system, performing evaluations of defendants in criminal and child custody cases.
The two met, she said, when she contacted his office to volunteer to do work on his mental health bill that was signed into law in December.
“I respect him as a colleague,” she said. “We worked very hard to pass legislation that helps my clients.
“We had a collegial and friend relationship before anything else.”
In a Feb. 2 hearing, Ms. Edwards testified that a physical relationship with Mr. Murphy did not begin until after her marriage had failed. She and her husband were married on July 28, 2012.
In court filings, Dr. Sally alleged that the affair his wife had with Mr. Murphy “caused the marriage to end.” But Ms. Edwards denies that, saying “An extramarital affair was not responsible for the dissolution of our marriage. We are both responsible for the dissolution of our marriage and the role each of us played in that.”
The initial divorce complaint filed by Dr. Sally referred to adultery, and later filings noted Ms. Edwards was having a relationship with “a well-known political figure in the community.”
Dr. Sally alleged in court documents that Ms. Edwards’ affair with Mr. Murphy began in approximately February 2016 and continued until the fall of 2016. Dr. Sally’s attorney listed a dozen dates in Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C. and Miami where he claimed the relationship occurred. They began in Washington, from Feb. 2-4, and concluded in Miami from July 19-21.
Ms. Edwards said that the trips referenced were made to advocate on behalf of Mr. Murphy’s legislation. In the February court hearing, she testified that she did not make the trips “with” him.
Ms. Wolbert said during the hearing Wednesday that Mr. Murphy and Ms. Edwards had 392 phone calls with each other between March 14, 2016, and May 23, 2016.
The initial divorce proceeding was sealed by Judge Hens-Greco on July 13, 2016, after Ms. Edwards filed a motion seeking to have the docket and its contents protected, alleging that if it were to be publicly available it could impede her livelihood.
After the Post-Gazette sought to intervene and unseal the case on Aug. 3, Mr. Horoho and Ms. Edwards’ attorney, Timothy Gricks, fought to keep it closed.
At argument on that issue on Wednesday, Post-Gazette attorney Frederick Frank told the judge that the congressman and Ms. Edwards were required to show a compelling governmental interest as to why the case ought to remain sealed.
Mr. Horoho responded that there was “no legitimate purpose” to broadcast the contents of the file, and that his client was only dragged into the case by Dr. Sally to embarrass him. He also contended that Mr. Murphy is already harassed regularly because of his political positions.
“Demonstrations will be increased. Harassment is going to increase,” he said. “Is there a legitimate issue? Is there a public interest?”
Mr. Horoho cited Mr. Murphy’s rights to be safe and free from harassment as that compelling interest.

But Judge Hens-Greco responded, “How does anyone know that it does not implicate his public duties?”
In unsealing the record, she told the parties that the Constitution says that all courts are to be open, and that neither Mr. Murphy’s nor Ms. Edwards’ rights to privacy outweigh the First Amendment right to a free press.
“How does her personal right to privacy trump the Post-Gazette’s right to tell people what I’m doing?” Judge Hens-Greco asked.
She noted that when she initially sealed the case, no parties had objected to it.
“The argument presented [then] was that her job providing evaluations to the court, that issues of her divorce, are not something people need to consider,” the judge said. “Maybe I was wrong.”
Representative Tim Murphy (R-Penn.) is correct in writing that helping people with mental illness is not a “partisan battle.” But we know he is someone who cares about this issue enough to realize this debate must be rooted in facts. The recent article Murphy penned for The Hill offers views that are at odds with basic facts and reality.
We think it is important to hold up some of the claims “of failed policies” in Congressman Murphy’s letter against the facts so that a more productive discussion of behavioral health policy can result. Moreover, the “better way” he argues that is offered by the American Health Care Act would make matters worse, not better, for the populations he champions.

When Donald Trump was elected president last November, his elder daughter was portrayed as liberal America’s consolation prize, like a Christmas present from an absentee dad plunked on the doormat in February. Uh, this is what you Democrats are into, right? Women? Businesswomen? Your little woman projects? That’s still your thing, right?
She has played her role dutifully, pretending to care about women’s upward mobility just enough to soothe the complacent and provide plausible deniability for her father.
And, inexplicably — perhaps because hope has been thin on the ground since November — some people seem to be taken in. If Ms. Trump says she was dismayed by her father’s announced ban on transgender people in the military, well, I guess it’s true. What a nice moderate lady! If Ms. Trump says that America is no place for Nazis and white supremacists, are we going to tell her she’s wrong? She probably just forgot to mention that some of those Nazis and white supremacists were marching in explicit support of her father. That can happen. As a working mom myself, I know it can be hard to keep all these details straight!
The fact is, the only evidence we have of Ms. Trump’s supposed moderating effects and passion for progressive causes is her word. And, unfortunately for the entire planet, the word of a Trump isn’t worth very much.
A real advocate for women’s power and prosperity would be devastated by President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which will shatter the lives of hundreds of thousands of immigrant women and the people who depend on them. A real advocate for women’s autonomy would fight indefatigably for affordable health care and abortion access. A real advocate for women would care about gay women, trans women, black women, Muslim women, Jewish women and all the other women being dehumanized and imperiled by Trumpism’s fetish for calamity. If you are helping only certain women, then you do not actually care about women.
Ivanka Trump is never going to come through. Coming through isn’t her function. She is more a logo than a person, a scarecrow stuffed with branding, an heiress-turned-model-turned-multimillionaire’s-wife play acting as an authority on the challenges facing working women so that she can sell more pastel sheath dresses.

By the way, the world won the war against Nazi fascism in the 1940s, just as America won the war against the Confederacy in the 1860s. Aligning with two lost causes just labels you as profound losers.
