A magnitude 3.7 earthquake that struck underneath South Los Angeles just after midnight Wednesday sent light shaking across the Los Angeles Basin.
The earthquake occurred at 12:03 a.m. Light shaking — felt indoors by many, and enough to rattle dishes and windows and rock parked cars — was calculated as occurring in South L.A., Inglewood, Culver City, Playa Vista and the Los Angeles International Airport.
Weak shaking was likely felt across the L.A. Basin and the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys and northern Orange County.
The earthquake’s epicenter was about half a mile southeast of Slauson and La Brea avenues.

But while the airlines enjoy a $25-billion bailout, the CARES Act — a federal stimulus package for businesses and individuals affected by the coronavirus pandemic — and its centerpiece, the Paycheck Protection Program, is the equivalent of a Band-Aid — one of the small ones that goes around your finger.
It’s leaving local restaurants and other small business owners wondering: Where’s the money? In the meantime, large chains like Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Potbelly Sandwich Shop are allowed to suck the fund dry, having been granted multimillion-dollar loans.
The PPP is a Small Business Administration loan program designed to give small businesses financial relief. Businesses can apply for up to 250% of their monthly payroll: If your payroll is $100,000 per month, you can apply for a $250,000 loan. The loans are forgiven if 75% of the money is used to pay employees.
Sounds simple, right? In reality, it hasn’t worked out that way, particularly for smaller, independent businesses.
After opening applications on April 3, the SBA announced Thursday that the $350 billion earmarked for the program is gone, stating: “The SBA is currently unable to accept new applications for the Paycheck Protection Program based on available appropriations funding.”
That leaves many businesses, particularly clients of large banks who prioritize their wealthy clients, in the dark. A volunteer died Friday morning in Sylmar while helping out at a food drive after he was pinned between two vehicles, police said.
The 58-year-old San Fernando man was loading food into the trunk of a car when the driver of a Ford Expedition SUV suddenly drove forward about 30 to 40 feet and crushed him against the car.
“It appears that he unintentionally hit the throttle instead of the break and accelerated,” said Sgt. Kurt Smith with the Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division.
The incident happened in the parking lot of a church at the intersection of Glenoaks Boulevard and El Casco Street.
The 77-year-old driver* remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
The victim was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.
Because of the incident, Los Angeles Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez said she plans to introduce legislation to increase on-site traffic safety measures.

The whole concept of being a landlord is only possible because, under capitalism, housing is privatized. Many landlords use this as an excuse for charging you money to live in their unoccupied homes and buildings while they profit—that’s just how the system works! But surely, you could simply not buy a second home or investment property. You could even rent out an apartment you no longer needed in order to pass on ownership to the tenant, charging only property taxes and maintenance, at no profit. You could use your TV-show money to buy a building and share it equitably as a co-op, while living there amongst the other owners, allowing individuals and families to buy in affordably or at no cost, depending on means. Instead, the free market guides, and the point is to turn a profit off of the income of your tenants.
