The John Lennon Fillmore East ControversyThe song is also widely known for a dispute over copyright and royalties.
- The Performance: Zappa's band played a legendary set at the Fillmore East in June 1971, which John Lennon and Yoko Ono joined unannounced.
- The Agreement: Both artists were given access to the concert tapes for their own separate projects.
- The Plagiarism: When Lennon released Some Time in New York City in 1972, Zappa’s "King Kong" was included, renamed as "Jamrag," and credited to Lennon and Ono. Zappa was never compensated.
- Zappa's Statement: In subsequent interviews, Zappa expressed disappointment. He noted: "It's got a melody, it's got a bass line; it's obviously an organized song. Little bit [sic] disappointing.".]

Per the composer: "This is a song about King Kong. The Americans brought him to New York City, made a few bucks off him, and then they killed him". I remember Frank was ticked because Jim Pons' bass track had been erased when the Lennon-Onos were mixing it for their purposes (Klaus Voormann dubbed the bass on Some Time in New York City.) but he didn't mention stolen credit. It may have been before Some Time was released. In the long run, of course, almost all involved are dead.
And now I see the Mothers' version wasn't released until 1992.
Down an effing rabbit hole there. Can't believe how long it takes. What a waste of my beautiful mind & time.
