There Will Always Be An England
I was
very excited/amused to see this, assuming it to be a rant against slovenly Southern Americans,
From the archive, 6 August 1938: Southerners accused of slovenly speech
but it turned out to be the actual King's actual English, Limeys rather than Crackers.
'As teachers we must do our best to preserve the best features of the King's English and to restrict the absorption of any element, whether from the drawing-room or from the gutter'
Looked for a video mocking hick accents &
found this ironic:
The first British colony in America was established in 1607 in Virginia. These Southern colonies quickly grew wealthy from crops such as tobacco and cotton. This wealth created a rich, upper class. They wanted to mimic the
posh British accent as a sign of their wealth and status. This meant dropping r’s and elongating vowels. Over time, the Southern accent slowed down and developed its own flavor.
Pretentious mush-mouthed phonies from the git-go.
