Swimming W/ Single-Digit Salamanders

Looks like Newtie's figured out which side his bread's buttered on:
Since his unceremonious departure from the House in 1998, Gingrich has become Newt Inc. -- one part provocateur, one part entrepreneur, who stirs debate in his party and in journalistic circles, gets Sunday talk show invites and draws audiences on the lecture circuit. A presidential flirtation helps Gingrich further raise his profile, push his ideas and sell his books.
Wonder why? From ABC News/WaPo 18-21 July. 403 polled. Rudy Giuliani 34% John McCain 16% Fred Thompson 14% Mitt Romney 8% Newt Gingrich 7% Tommy Thompson 3% Mike Huckabee 2% Duncan Hunter 2% Ron Paul 2% Sam Brownback 2% Tom Tancredo 1% None of these (vol.) 5% Wouldn't vote (vol.) 1% Unsure 5% We didn't know how poorly Mittens is doing, but it warms our evil heart. We're none too happy about Rudy G. atop the pile though.

The great thing about Rudy baby being the lead horse in the Repug horse race is that he will not play well with the Repug base, what with his views on things like abortion and gun control. Not that the prospect of another Clinton in the Oval Office warms the cockels of my heart, what with all the money she's accepted from the healthcare lobby.... bah....

Editorial Response:
Frightening thought: If the R base doesn't take to Mayor 9/11™ (they'll have to decide between Family Values & Protecting the Homeland, & for those in base-istan it's pretty much the same thing) it's not impossible that today's equivalent of "Reagan Democrats" (which would be, what, NASCAR Dads, Soccer/Security Moms?) might prefer the ex-mayor of NYC to the current Sen. from NY.
However, six mos. remain before actual electoral choice will begin to shake out whoever is still in the horse race. And it may all be over in a brief two-week spurt after that. Long, slow build up...Um, what The Editor means is, uh...Uh, anything can happen, yeah, six mos. is plenty of time for one or another to make a major misstep & completely change track conditions.

A Personal Note from The Editor:
Well, look at Just Another Blog™! Making predictions 'bout the big race, like a tout @ the track, or a pundit...And how disarmingly easy it is, too...just type platitudinously from one's ass about some obvious possibility, click publish..
