... RECORD HEAT EXPECTED FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA TODAY...
A STRONG UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM COMBINED WITH OFFSHORE FLOW NEAR THE SURFACE WILL LIKELY BRING RECORD HEAT TO PARTS OF THE SOUTHLAND TODAY. THE WARMEST LOCATIONS ARE GENERALLY EXPECTED TO BE ACROSS COASTAL AND VALLEY AREAS OF LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTIES DUE TO THE GREATER OFFSHORE INFLUENCE IN THOSE LOCATIONS. WARMEST LOCATIONS TODAY WILL LIKELY CLIMB INTO THE UPPER 90S. THE RECORD HIGH OF 96 DEGREES TODAY FOR DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES CERTAINLY LOOKS WITHIN REACH... WITH OTHER RECORDS LIKELY TO BE TIED OR EXCEEDED.
We certainly weren't expecting that. Worse, we must leave the bunker today, & may be washed away in the deluge.Issued by The National Weather Service

HIGHER THAN NORMAL SURF OF 4 TO 6 FEET WILL AFFECT PORTIONS OF THE LOS ANGELES AND SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY BEACHES THROUGH THIS EVENING. LOCAL SETS TO 8 FEET COULD OCCUR ALONG THE WEST FACING BEACHES... MAINLY LATE THIS MORNING. THERE IS A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR RIP CURRENTS AS WELL.
More Information
... HIGH SURF AT SOME AREA BEACHES THROUGH THE EVENING...
A LARGE LONG-PERIOD NORTHWEST SWELL GENERATED BY A STORM SYSTEM IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC OCEAN WILL CONTINUE TO CREATE HIGH SURF CONDITIONS ACROSS THE BEACHES OF SAN LUIS OBISPO AND WESTERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES TODAY. AS THE SWELL PUSHES SOUTH OF POINT CONCEPTION TODAY... THE SWELL WILL DECAY BUT THE LONG SWELL PERIOD ENERGY WILL ALLOW FOR HIGH SURF ACROSS VENTURA COUNTY BEACHES AND FOR HIGHER THAN NORMAL SURF ALONG WEST FACING BEACHES OF LOS ANGELES AND SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY. RESIDENTS AND VISITORS IN THE AFFECTED AREA CAN EXPECT RIP CURRENTS AND LOCALIZED BEACH EROSION.

I spent the afternoon in Winnetka, at the DMV, in the 90+ degree heat. I also had half a banh mi in my purse because I didn't want to leave it in the car. The smell of pickled daikons stayed with me all afternoon.
