1936: He's still dead, but Francisco "Fascist Falangist" Franco was proclaimed the head of the insurgent Spanish state.
1949: Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China. Next yr., the East will have been Red for 60 yrs.
Fifty Yrs. Ago: Amex card introduced.
1964: Free Speech Movement starts at UC Berkeley.
