That said, the Soviet engines are a better design than what anybody other than Elton Musk has managed to create in the United States over the past forty years... if there was a problem, my guess is that it's bad quality control, not the design of the engines.
And yes, that's saying a sad thing, that a forty year old design is better than every American rocket engine created since then (other than Musk's). Sigh.
Liquid fueled multi-stage rocket engines are a nightmare of complex, counterintuitive CFD. When they work at all, it's just barely and always on the ragged edge...
