The arrival of the Lewis and Clark expedition on the Pacific coast saw a remarkable First. The expedition members were divided about the safest place to site their fortified camp (from both a shelter POV and relations with the local Native American folk). They decided to vote on the issue, and everyone had a vote, including Sacajawea and Clark's Black servant, York. The first known votes by a Black person and a woman on American soil.
