Panamanian tanker Norness is torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-123 at 40°26'30"N,
70°54'30"W; destroyer Ellyson (DD-454) and Coast Guard cutter Argo (WPC 100) rescue 30 men, while fishing boat Malvina picks up nine and brings them to Newport, Rhode Island.
