(The author can't spell "Theodor," so he may be a real cretin.)The extra irony being that Adorno despised all popular music of his time. Imagine what he'd think of Hannah Montana, or any of the last 40 yrs. of pop. Or whatever we've linked to.

Adorno fan here (and as Adorno noted, "fan" is short for "fanatic"). He did indeed despise popular music, saving his most vitriolic criticism for jazz, whose improvisational nature violated the primacy of the score which, in Kantian terms, is the very heart of music. He also saw some "classical" (as most people know it) music as progressive (twelve tone music) and some as regressive (Stravinsky). He wrote a whole book on just that subject. He lived here in Los Angeles during the reign of der Fuhrer, but beat it back to (West) Germany when the McCarthy era really got underway. He was expert at running away from fascism.
