Not even actual bread.In older culinary usage, a gâteau (plural gâteaux) did not strictly refer to a sweet layered dessert. Historically, it described basic baked blocks of flour and water eaten like bread.

What they told me in school (half a century ago) was that bread dough used to rise above the edge of the baking pan and spill over onto the oven floor, where it would collect and char, which at the end of the day would be scraped off and offered to beggars. It was called "ash cake," and contained enough nutrition to sustain life, but tasted like ash.
