The Wk. In Beck

Apparently live from the Oval Office, one cultural icon disses another.
Shorter G.B. & his all-dude, all-honky posse: "I'm not a racist, but ..."

This just in! Good thing we left this item simmering.

And this is more sad than anything else.

Wow. The wrestling thing is fairly sweet.

His views may be odious, but there is no doubt that Glen Beck is a genius. He throws the most extreme red meat to the most radical and uninformed hayseeds, and in doing so he gets 300,000 of them to send him ten bucks a month, generating about 40 million dollars in the first year. He's not going to change any minds or have any actual influence on the political debate, but he's getting stoopid rich without working very hard at all...

That's a different metric for "genius" than what I would ever use. It doesn't take a genius to fleece rubes.

If all you care about is money, then there are a lot of "geniuses" that I would just call sociopathic shitheads.

Other than Limbaugh, and maybe O'Reilly, where do you see "a lot of "geniuses"?

Just because you don't like somebody, or disagree with their ideology, it's kind of adolescent to deny that they are unusually successful. Other than Limbaugh, you'd be hard pressed to name another one of these doods bringing in anywhere NEAR 40 million a year.

Hmm. Maybe fleecing the rubes turns out to be a lot harder than you want to believe...

"Unusually successful" and "genius" are two completely different things. Or do you think a carnival huckster is a genius just 'cause he might manage to get rich?

Why equate genius with money?

Also, I wasn't thinking of media people only -- think wall street scammers stealing people's retirement and such.

Ugh, Glenn Beck comes across as a creepy Mr Rogers in that second video.

Small Market Editor:
There are only so many rubes available to be fleeced (something like 27% of the population) so there's plenty of competition for the cretins among the loon-shouters (as opposed to whisperers). Only room for a few really successful geniuses at grifting.

Isn't "creepy" redundant in the Mr. Rogers context?

Yes. Yes it is.
