Tens of thousands of people rallied in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, on Saturday to pressure populist President Aleksandar Vučić to call an early parliamentary election, following nearly eight months of ongoing protests.University students played a key role in organising the nationwide demonstrations, which began after the collapse of a newly renovated railway station canopy killed 16 people on November 1.
Many citizens blamed the incident on widespread government corruption and negligence in public infrastructure projects, fuelling public outrage and repeated mass protests.
Despite the growing unrest, President Vučić and his ruling Serbian Progressive Party have continued to reject calls for early elections.
Presidential and parliamentary elections in Serbia are currently scheduled for 2027.
