Submarine Pogy (SS-266) sinks Japanese aircraft transport Mogamigawa Maru northwest of Truk, 11°08'N, 153°18'E.
Submarine Saury (SS-189), at periscope depth, is rammed by Japanese destroyer and damaged, Philippine Sea, 27°03'N, 135°27'E; consequently, Saury terminates her patrol.

PBM (VP 74) and Brazilian A-28 and Catalinasink German submarine U-199 off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 23°45'S, 42°57'W. Small seaplane tender Barnegat (AVP-10) rescues German survivors.A Brazilian Catalina attacked and sank U-199 in Brazilian waters on 31 July 1943. Later, the aircraft was baptized as “ArarĂ¡”, in memory of the merchant ship of that name which was sunk by another U-boat.
