As Digby reminds us today on her Hullaballoo blog, over 16,000 G.I.'s were to be killed that year in that unholy war. I remember, too, that it was before the show on a Sunday night just a few weeks before that LBJ announced to the nation that he would not seek re-election. I assume that announcement inspired Pat Paulen to toss his hat into the ring, in fact, but I can't say I really remember.. Superfluous to note, to the nation's grave misfortune to this very day, Paulsen lost, and Nixon won.
