Seven people linked to the beating death of a teenager in the Word of Life Church sanctuary in Chadwicks are now charged with murder.
Among those charged with murder are the boy's father, Bruce Leonard, and the church pastor, Tiffanie Irwin.
A grand jury also indicted Joseph Irwin, David Morey, Sarah Ferguson, Linda Morey, and Traci Irwin on second degree murder charges.
An eight suspect, Daniel Irwin, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.
Police initially charged the boys’ parents, Bruce and Deborah Leonard, with manslaughter, and arrested the others on an array of charges, including assault.
The Oneida County District Attorney’s Office says that the case of the boy’s mother, Deborah Leonard, will be handled separately.
She is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 2.
Police say 19-year-old Lucas Leonard and 17-year-old Christopher Leonard were both severely beaten “over the course of hours” in the church sanctuary.
According to police, Lucas Leonard suffered “a violent death over the course of hours.”
They found Christopher while investigating the 19-year-old’s death.
Seven children have been removed from the Word of Life community and put in the care of child protective services, police say.
