And yes, that's saying a sad thing, that a forty year old design is better than every American rocket engine created since then (other than Musk's). Sigh.
Liquid fueled multi-stage rocket engines are a nightmare of complex, counterintuitive CFD. When they work at all, it's just barely and always on the ragged edge...
