Unlike our cousins in Europe, we remain a church going nation with a majority who believe in God, or at least claim to.
I'm not a history major, but I don't belive Europe was ever a church going nation. I agree that a majority of people in this country claim to believe in God. But, based on the their actions, it's obvious that most of them don't truly believe that the fate of their immortal soul truly rests on the judgement of their deeds and their treatment of their fellow man.
Three-Level Editor: They don't believe any of that claptrap. As long as they accept Jesus as their personal savior any time before their deaths their immortal souls are covered.
You don't really even have to pretend to be a decent human being any more. (We stopped a while ago ourself.)
