It was so unexpected then. It still feels weird now. I was 18. I had Boxing Day marked in my calendar as the final day the USSR existed. Less than 5 months later, we had a raging war in the former Yugoslavia. And Europe showed indifference, just as they don't care about the fate of Ukraine today.
