Submarine Trigger (SS-237) sinks Japanese merchant collier Noborikawa Maru off Kominato, southern Honshu, 35°02'N, 140°14'E.

Atlantic
U.S. freighter Flora McDonald, torpedoed by German submarine U-126 off the west coast of Africa on 30 May 1943, is beached at Freetown, Sierra Leone, to facilitate salvage. She burns for 16 days, however (part of her cargo includes rubber) and she is subsequently written off as a total loss.
