Bad Sign

LASD At Work

From the bus. Pardon the quality.
The almost-leafless trees tell us winter's here.
As close as we got.

Today's Report

Most likely a partial one.We will not be moving to Aurora, CO soon.

No one dead in this one, but not for lack of trying.
A deputy shot and wounded an armed suicidal woman outside a Pine Hills pub after she threatened officers with a handgun during a standoff Saturday.

The woman — described as being in her 50s — was injured by shotgun pellets when she came out of the Golden Cue and Pub in the 6800 block of West Colonial Drive while pointing a gun at a deputy.

Deputies spent about 45 minutes calling to the woman to come out of the establishment. She came out twice but retreated back into the business.

The first time, she emerged pointing a gun and a deputy armed with a shotgun fired when she refused to lower her weapon. The pellets from the buckshot struck the woman in the upper chest and shoulder, said Jeff Williamson, a Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The woman retreated into the establishment, continued to ignore commands and came out once more.
She was distraught because her dog had to be euthanized. Very sad, but really? Was she (like the late Nancy Lanza) one of those "law-abiding citizens" of whom the NRA is so fond? Right until this happened?

We Post, You Decide

Another lame compare/contrast deal, w/ music to which nobody listens.

Crummy Games Of The Wk.

We've haven't watched/had on as background noise while slaving over the Internet more than a tiny fraction of this season's 30-some possible bowl games, but have any of them been anything? OK, Louisville beat Florida Something (Or just plain Florida?) in an upset recently. But that's it. As far as the national championship bowl, it's coin-flip time, because we can't decide which team we most want to lose.

Both this wknd.'s games come to us from the state of Alabama. What's up w/ thattherew/?
Tin soldiers & Nixon's coming ... to the Bowl.

Prank Calling

Compare & contrast the silent D.W. Griffith intro w/ the sudden psychedelia/music from Hair (0:55) followed by the documentary pseudo-realism. And don't miss the solarization at the end. Trippy. (Ma Bell, 1969.)Behind the scenes:
Yes, you can find anything on the Internet. Hell, you can find anything on YouTube.Lots of anything.

Threat Assessment*

If you've missed Confederate Yankee recently, he's no longer Confederate Yankee, just plain ol' Bob, & he's working on a Turner Diaries kind of a revenge fantasy thing ...
Let me explain, gun grabbers, how your confiscatory fantasy plays out. Let us imagine for a moment that a sweeping gun control bill similar to the one currently suggested is passed by the House and Senate, and signed into law by a contemptuous President.
Contemptuous? So sensitive, these gunmen. Anyway, Confederate Bob goes on for ten paragraphs detailing his adolescent/juvenile fantasy of a bloodbath ("It will not be pretty. There will be no 'winners,' and perhaps hundreds of thousands to millions of dead.") inspired by an imagined threat of gun confiscation. Here let us pause & note that in no way at all whatever is Bob suggesting that you should join a "resistance cell" or become a lone wolf &, you know, kill every single person you don't like, starting w/ residents of blue states & larger cities.
The elites will be steadily whittled down, and if they can not be reached directly, the targets will become their staffers, spouses, children, and grandchildren. Grandstanding media figures loyal to the regime would die in droves, executed as enemies of the Republic.
Sure they will Bob. Every last grandchild, every Congressional staffer who ever hung up on you, every media figure who laughed at you from the tee vee set, dead like doorknobs. Feels good thinking about it, doesn't it? You'll show them. They'll be sorry!

And, how the Wolverines will beat the Army, Navy, Marines & Air Force, & what's going to happen after that.
Some of these defectors will be true “operators,” with the skills and background to turn ragtag militia cells into the kind of forces that decimate loyalist troops, allowing them no rest and no respite, striking them when they are away from their most potent weapons. Military vehicles are formidable, but they are thirsty beasts, in terms of fuel, ammo, time, and maintenance. Tanks and bombers are formidable only when they have gas, guns, and can be maintained. In a war without a front, logistics are incredibly easy to destroy, and mechanics and supply clerks are not particularly adept at defending themselves.

Eventually, the government will turn upon itself. The President will be captured or perhaps killed by his own protectors. A dictatorship will form in the vacuum.
That President will learn not to hold Bob Owens in contempt.
If we’re lucky, the United States of America, or whatever amalgam results, will again try to rebuild. If we’re very lucky, the victors will reinstate the Constitution as the law of the land. Just as likely though, we’ll face fractious civil wars fought over issues we’ve not begun to fathom, and a much diminished state or states will result, perhaps guided by foreign interests.
Now who hates America & wants to see it destroyed? By "foreign interests," yet. If rebelling & destroying the country doesn't play directly into the hands of mysterious foreign interests what does?

Further drooling documented.
*Our assessment is that the Secret Service, FBI & ATFE should take all of Bob's toys away from before he hurts himself.

First, Accurate, Pointless

W/ or w/o an audience, we still take pride in beating losers to the punch.

Us, on it like brown on shit, 1759 yesterday. Loser A/V, today, no time stamp. Loser B credits Loser A/V later today (obviously) at 1328.

Oh screw. All that typing was essentially for zip, nada, yada.
If we'd just clicked play on any one of the sites where it's posted we could've been watching telebision instead of turd-polishing. Hell, we had barely seen or heard any of it, we're so damn busy.

Also, later, another loser. Who claims to have seen it live.

We Fucking Hate You Fucking Fucks!!

We were contemplating following Andrew Sullivan's lead & moving this mess to a reader-supported basis, but a look at the chart suggests that would be a biiiig mistake.
What the hell?
Thanks for the support, you fucking jerks!

Hypocrisy Watch

A guy at The American Prospect notices that the NRA is just a little bit two-faced.
When Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association made his dramatic statements about the Newtown shooting, he placed the blame on some familiar suspects: not just insufficient militarization of elementary schools, but movies and video games. "Media conglomerates," he said, "compete with one another to shock, violate, and offend every standard of civilized society by bringing an ever more toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty into our homes." But Matt Gertz of Media Matters discovered that the NRA is not so opposed to movies that feature people shooting each other. In fact, the NRA's National Firearms Museum features an exhibit called "Hollywood Guns," in which you can check out the actual guns used in some of your favorite films (go to the end of this post for a video of the NRA museum curator proudly showing off the movie guns).
You might respond that the NRA is full of crap when it points the finger at Hollywood, which of course it is. But let's take them at their word for a moment and examine the claim. If movies featuring a lot of gunplay cause real-world violence (there's no actual evidence that this is the case, by the way, but never mind that), then what is it exactly that the NRA believes produces this effect? Is it that the narratives of action films convince people that the most serious problems can be solved with the use of firearms? Is it that movies portray a world in which people are constantly called on to use guns, when that isn't the case in real life? Is it that movies portray gun use not as a horror or a tragedy but as something to be enjoyed? Is it that movies fetishize guns, making them seem like not just practical tools but objects that imbue those who wield them with power and sexiness?

Because it seems pretty clear that rather than thinking those ideas are a problem, the NRA believes them to be true. Not only that, it wants everyone else to believe them, too. Do they think people are dumb enough to buy the argument that the NRA would like to see fewer guns in movies? That they're displeased that every other movie poster features the star holding a gun, as a signal to the potential audience that this is a film with action and excitement? Give me a break.
We've even included the video.Full service at this web log, including a link to our source's source.

We feel nothing but sympathy for this young man, because we're taking a diuretic that sends us pissing every ten fucking minutes & every time we stand. And because of our absolute & utter contempt for bourgeois society & its repression of freedom w/ "public health" & "sanitation" regulations. From TMZ via LAist.

Which is it, fuckheads? Millions or billions? Plants or planets? What really pisses us off is that incompetent sacks of shit like these two are making a living at this crap. Fuck them, the horses they rode in on, & their families. Twice.

Musical Selection

No reports of cannnibalism having appeared on the radar in the last few minutes, we pause to listen to a fine cover of a swell number.Complete palate cleanse/emetic.

Theme For The New Yr.: Dinner

Didn't expect it would be cannibalism, but when life gives you ... uh, never mind. It's not life, it's just the Internet.
When the head of a production brigade dares to state the obvious – that there is no food – a leader warns him: "That's right-deviationist thinking. You're viewing the problem in an overly simplistic manner."
Words to live by.
The Great Famine remains a taboo in China, where it is referred to euphemistically as the Three Years of Natural Disasters or the Three Years of Difficulties. Yang's monumental account, first published in Hong Kong, is banned in his homeland.

He had little idea of what he would find when he started work: "I didn't think it would be so serious and so brutal and so bloody. I didn't know that there were thousands of cases of cannibalism. I didn't know about farmers who were beaten to death.

"People died in the family and they didn't bury the person because they could still collect their food rations; they kept the bodies in bed and covered them up and the corpses were eaten by mice. People ate corpses and fought for the bodies. In Gansu they killed outsiders; people told me strangers passed through and they killed and ate them. And they ate their own children. Terrible. Too terrible."

For a moment he stops speaking.

"To start with, I felt terribly depressed when I was reading these documents," he adds. "But after a while I became numbed – because otherwise I couldn't carry on."
We know the feeling.

Yet another compare & contrast.

Many/most local newsrooms gave this AP story a lead like "deal close, not done." A different spin was applied by our new friends at GOPUSA:
Any bets on how long they considered "Uppity Mulatto?"

Union "Thugs" Follow-Up

Did someone say "Eat the rich?" Previously reported labor action participants now apparently smeared by feudalist authorities.
A crowd of 1000 workers at the privately-owned MKB Tea Estate in the state of Assam surrounded the plantation owner's bungalow last week. A mob then set it on fire in violence blamed on festering labour unrest in the region.

"Our investigations say that at least five plantation workers ate the flesh of the tea planter and his wife after they were brutally killed," Numol Mahatao, deputy police chief of Tinsukia district, told reporters on Tuesday.

"We suspect that about 15 people were actually involved in the crime although there were some 1000 present there at the spot," the police official said. "We have identified all the masterminds and nine are in our custody so far."
Expect show trials w/o evidence & quick convictions.
Tea workers are notoriously badly paid and often housed in poor accommodation in remote areas. They have few protections from police and cannot take advantage of laws designed to guarantee them health care and fair working conditions, rights groups say.

The Indian Express newspaper said the violence was sparked by orders from the boss for 10 estate workers to vacate their quarters and by the detention of three employees by police over unspecified disputes.

"We are investigating the reasons that led to the attack. But whatever may be the reason, such acts of barbarism are unacceptable in this modern world," Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi* said on Tuesday.

*Christ, what an asshole.

Initials: B.S.

Rest of it probably not worth the effort, but as this mostly agrees w/ most of our musical opinions (OK, some of these acts we've never consciously heard/listened to more than once, max.) we'll just leave it here.
Blame it on stubbornness if you will, or subconscious ass-covering, but I honestly can’t manage any kinder words now than I did at the time for Sting’s early solo work (“a tedious, bankrupt and vacuous cavern of a record … his pedantic instincts and bulging ego inform the lyrics at every turn with political dilettantism, literary namedropping and prolix pseudo-profundities”), Jane’s Addiction (“most of the record sounds like the work of an incompetent Aerosmith cover band. And Farrell’s effete habit of interjecting the word ‘motherfucker’ merely frosts the album’s maggotry”), Barenaked Ladies (“As cute as a baby and as appealing as a loaded diaper”) or any barrel-bound fish I have shot at. I do a mental check of my animosity for Bruce Springsteen now and again (he’s not an artist I’ve written much about, but my friends have all heard the spiel, and I was once included in a newspaper article about rock crit apostasy because of it; my other digressions from the gospel include the Flying Burrito Brothers, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams and Wilco), and I’m still not a fan.
Note to self: Nice start to the new yr., abusing the successful & popular from a collapsing hovel in downtown Bitter-Fucking-Hatredville, where we're sitting around in last yr.'s stained & hole-y underwear.

Parking dispute may have led to Maine shooting deaths: police

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts | Sun Dec 30, 2012 7:11pm EST
(Reuters) - A dispute between neighbors over street parking may have led to the shooting deaths of two Maine teenagers, authorities said on Sunday after charging a 74-year-old man with murder in connection with the incident.
Derrick Thompson, 19, and his girlfriend, Alivia Welch, 18, were killed on Saturday night in their apartment inside a two-unit home in Biddeford, Maine, about 15 miles southwest of Portland, state police spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Thompson's mother, Susan Johnson, 44, who reported the shootings to authorities shortly after 7 p.m. EST, was being treated for gunshot wounds at Maine Medical Center in Portland, state police. A six-year-old boy also was removed from the building uninjured.

James Pak, who owns the building and lives in the other unit, was arrested on Saturday and charged with two counts of murder.

Police had been summoned to the residence earlier on Saturday because of an argument over parking, McCausland said. A Biddeford police spokeswoman said the city banned street parking from 8 p.m. until 7 a.m. to allow for snow removal.

McCausland said the dispute appeared to have been resolved before the shooting occurred but gave no further details.

Pak was being held in a local jail and was expected to appear in court on Monday or Wednesday. It was unclear whether he had an attorney. (Edited by Karen Brooks and Paul Simao)
Figures it would be a landlord, doesn't it?

Gawd, Gubmint & Guns

From the people who killed Newsweek, yet another compare & contrast. First, miserable excuse Michael Medved sticks w/ what he knows: Being holier-than-thou.
The problem isn’t religious conservatives and their abiding faith in God; it’s mainstream liberals and their blind confidence in government.
We're quite sure there's a significant difference between "abiding faith" & "blind confidence" & that Mr. Medved will make it clear at the first possible chance. Maybe after he's finished w/ that cancer cure he's working on.
Consider the current dispute over the right response to gun violence. At its core, this argument comes down to a visceral disagreement between relying on self-defense or on government protection. Gun-rights enthusiasts insist that the best security for law-abiding citizens comes from placing formidable firearms into their hands; gun-control advocates believe we can protect the public far more effectively by taking guns away from as many Americans as possible. In other words, conservatives want to address the threat of gun violence by giving individuals more power while liberals seek to improve the situation by concentrating more power in the hands of the government. The right preaches self-reliance while the left places its trust in the higher power of government.
Now contrast w/ those who wholeheartedly believe what M.M. was saying, & the formidable firearms he'd place in their hands:
Pastor Paul Revere doesn’t recognize the authority of the State of Oregon, the United States of America, or anyone else that presumes to have some command over him. He answers only to God. “We believe there’s only one sovereign,” Revere told The Daily Beast. “And it isn’t us. Jesus said to render to Caesar that which is Caesar’s and render to God that which is God’s.”
If you love freedom, liberty, self-reliance & every other pathetic fascist platitude you'll sho' nuff want these freaks to have the most formidable firearms possible.
They are “sovereign citizens,” inspired by any number of complicated and cockamamie theories that all draw the same conclusion: we are not subject to your “laws.” And they are becoming an increasing headache for cops, public defenders, prosecutors, bailiffs, and judges all over the U.S., because when they inevitably land in court for driving without a license or failing to pay taxes, they clog up the system with reams of nonsensical paperwork. Their obfuscatory filings are so inundating that harried prosecutors often drop the charges against them—a victory for the sovereigns’ otherwise quixotic cause.

Sometimes the battles get bloody long before they see a courtroom, too. In 2010, 16-year-old sovereign Joseph Kane gunned down two police officers in West Memphis, Ark., after a routine traffic stop. The boy killed the officers with an AK-47 after his dad, 45-year-old sovereign Jerry Kane, got into a scuffle with one of the cops attempting to frisk him. Both Kanes were killed later that day in a shootout with police. Since 2000, “lone-offender sovereign-citizen extremists have killed six law enforcement officers,” according to the FBI.

Revere doesn’t advocate such violence*, but his website, where he explains that “grownups have been tricked into obeying the laws of humbugs, rather than the laws of God,” is chock-full of admonitions about why and how best to disobey such humbugs, even as it will surely land his followers in jail.

“If you have given your allegiance to Jesus Christ, and you live your beliefs, you will go to jail,” he writes. “It is inevitable because the world will hate you.”
Keep whining, Pastor Revere; everybody loves a martyr.

And Mr. Medved should hope there's gummint around to protect him when these citizens decide to follow orders from their vengeful God about what to do w/ the people who killed Jesus Christ.
*We don't advocate violence either, but if you touch us we'll break your fucking arm.

Threats: Idle, Or ...?

We can only assume that Senators of the Greedy Old Party decided not to fuck w/ Social Security
“Chained CPI won’t be a part of the deal,” Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) told reporters.
as an act of self-preservation, because people like us would slit their fucking throats (& not w/ votes) if our (Or anyone's. We'll be magnanimous.) Social Security insurance were to be fucked w/.
Democrats said earlier that Republicans had demanded a politically contentious reduction in Social Security benefits, known as chained CPI, in exchange for President Obama’s request to extend emergency unemployment benefits and cancel deep cuts to the Pentagon and other agency budgets.
But we're only safe until a long-term something is reached, judging from Senator Reid (Dipstick-NV):
“We’re willing to make difficult concessions as part of a balanced, comprehensive agreement, but we’ll not agree to cut Social Security benefits as part of a small or short-term agreement.”
It's almost as if the Senator is clearly stating that it'll take serious money from Wall Street before cuts to payments & "privatization" for workers under 55.
