National Security, Mickey Spillane Style

Our inner nihilist (really inner, innit?) hoped that the stationing of Russian bombers in Cuba & Venezuela was about to bring us to the brink, but as we scanned the story we could see it was merely another high-ranking Russki attempting to rattle some swords ("We will bury you in the six separate states you are about to become.") & it didn't seem worth a mention.

Then the name of the NSC spokesman caught our eye, & we decided to share.
Mike Hammer, spokesman for President Barack Obama's National Security Council, said, "We do not comment on hypotheticals."
Ralph Meeker as Mike Hammer in Kiss Me Deadly
Yikes. No pansies at the NSC. My Gun Is Quick, baby.

Yeah, Ralph Meeker was the best movie Mike Hammer, much better than when Mickey Spillane himself portrayed the detective. And that's an old Series 3 Colt Detective Special that Ralph is brandishing, the one with the exposed ejector rod that bent if you looked at it wrong and fucked up the ejector mechanism.

Was the ejector on those Colts made of pot metal?

No, you commie, it was made of good American steel, like Mickey Spillane's backbone! It just bent easily because it was exposed. The DS didn't get a shrouded ejector rod until 1973.

Actually, the photo of Ralph Meeker is rather misleading. In Spillane's books, Mike Hammer always carries a big, bad, army-issue Colt 1911 .45 automatic that he blasts bad guys with. It was the biggest, baddest handgun at the time.

Pulp Fiction Ed Replies:

Yezz, Mr. Hammer (& perhaps Mr. Spillane) had some battlefield issues, did he not?

We know we always travel w/ the biggest cannon we can find.
