1896: The soon enough to be late William McKinley (R) beat William Jennings "Cross of Gold" Bryan.
1908: Fatboy Taft (R) beat W. J. Bryan (again).
1936: FDR rolled over perpetual candidate Alfred M. "Alf" Landon.
In other parts of the world, in 1839, the first Opium War, 'tween China & Britain, got underway, & in 1903, Panama proclaimed independence from Colombia.
